How does eczema work?

My wife has chronic eczema, and I'm trying to understand the condition better so I can support her. From a scientific point of view, how exactly does eczema 'work' inside the body to cause all these symptoms?

It basically works by breaking down your skin's moisture barrier, making it super dry and itchy. It is very annoying but highly manageable with the right cream.

It works on an inflammatory pathway where your body's immune system overreacts on the skin surface. Since I manage diabetes, I know how easily compromised skin can lead to infections, so I keep my blood sugar and skin health both under strict check.

Think of your skin as a shield. Eczema works by creating gaps in that shield, which lets water escape and allows dust and irritants to enter and cause red patches. Don't stress, just focus on keeping that barrier covered with a thick moisturizer.

I have dealt with this for ten years; it works in a cycle of itching and scratching that damages your skin further. The trick is to break the cycle by using ceramides and avoiding hot water showers entirely. Once you strengthen the skin barrier, the flare-ups naturally reduce.

It works by making your skin highly sensitive to simple everyday things like washing powder or wool. Over time, I have learned that keeping a calm mind and using fragrance-free laundry detergent helps a lot. Just take it one day at a time, it is very controllable.

My grandmother said it is due to body heat, but our doctor explained that it works due to genetic skin barrier weakness. While we use traditional cooling foods, we strictly follow the dermatologist's prescription for the rash. It is best to combine comforting family care with modern medicine.
