How does asthma affect the breathing system?

A close friend of mine has asthma and sometimes struggles a lot, especially when it's dusty. I want to understand what's happening inside. How does asthma specifically affect the breathing system to cause such difficulty?

It is really terrifying because asthma causes the lining of your breathing tubes to swell up and produce thick mucus, which literally blocks the air from passing smoothly. I always worry that my throat will close up completely during an attack. If you feel any sudden tightness or can't speak in full sentences, please get emergency medical help immediately.

Haan, asthma actually makes your airways super sensitive to dust and cold air, and they immediately swell up. This extra mucus production makes it feel like you are breathing through a very tight pipe, na. Best is to keep your rescue inhaler always close and avoid dusty places as much as possible.

In simple terms, our breathing pipe gets swollen from inside and gets very narrow, like a choked water pipe. Because of this swelling, the air cannot go in and out freely, and the chest feels heavy and tight. Don't neglect this trouble, go to a good government hospital or clinic and show it to a doctor.

My grandmother used to say that drinking warm ginger water helps soothe the windpipe, but we must understand that asthma physically narrows the bronchial tubes due to inflammation. While home remedies can give mild comfort, only the inhalers prescribed by a doctor can actually relax those tight airway muscles during a breathing difficulty.

When my asthma flares up, it feels like my lungs are trying to breathe through a wet sponge because of all the thick mucus in the tubes. I also get a dry, hacking cough that just won't stop and makes my throat so sore. Do you guys also get this constant irritating cough along with the breathlessness?

Asthma causes chronic inflammation of the airways, leading to bronchospasms where the muscles around the breathing tubes tighten up. This makes it incredibly hard to exhale air properly, causing that classic whistling or wheezing sound. If you are experiencing these breathing system issues frequently, you must consult a pulmonologist for a lung function test.
