How does arthritis feel in knees?

Since last few months, I've been having pain in my knees, especially when I climb stairs or stand for long. My doctor said it might be arthritis, but I'm not sure what to expect. What kind of sensation is it exactly?

Honestly, at 51, my knees have started acting like an old weather station. If it is going to rain tomorrow, my joints will announce it today itself with a dull, nagging achiness. It just feels like there is rusty sand stuck inside the joint instead of smooth fluid.

I have had osteoarthritis in both knees for five years now, so I know this pain inside out. It starts as a mild catch when you get up from a low sofa, and slowly turns into a burning ache after any long walk. Don't stop moving completely, as that makes the stiffness worse; ask a physical therapist for gentle quadriceps exercises to keep the supporting muscles strong.

The feeling can actually vary from a constant dull ache to a sharp, pinching sensation when you try to climb stairs or stand up after sitting for long. Many people also complain of stiffness in the morning which gets slightly better as they move. It is really best to get an X-ray and see an orthopedist to confirm what stage it is instead of guessing.

My mother has been dealing with this for two years now, and she describes it as a deep, throbbing soreness that makes the knees feel heavy and weak. On bad days, even walking to the kitchen feels like a big task for her. Wearing a soft knee support sleeve during chores has helped her manage the daily discomfort a lot.

Along with that deep stiffness, you might feel a weird cracking or grinding sensation when you bend the legs. I noticed with my aunt that eating highly inflammatory fried foods made the swelling worse, so we switched her to a clean, home-cooked diet rich in turmeric and walnuts. But of course, diet only supports, you still need to follow a doctor's medical plan.

Oh God, when my knees first started cracking loudly and aching last year, I immediately panicked thinking I would need joint replacement surgery at this age. But my doctor calmly explained it was just early-stage wear and tear and completely manageable. Now with simple daily stretches and maintaining a healthy weight, I barely even notice it anymore.
