How does art help mental health?

Lately, I've been feeling a bit down, and someone suggested trying art or creative activities to help. I'm not really an artist, so I'm wondering, how does engaging with art actually contribute positively to mental well-being and emotional health?

Drawing and sketching helped me quiet my overactive mind during a very stressful phase of my life. It acts as an outlet for emotions that are hard to put into words. My advice is to just paint without worrying about how good it looks; the process itself is where the healing lies.

Engaging in creative activities can be a wonderful, soothing hobby for mild stress. However, if you are struggling with severe depression, anxiety, or prolonged mental distress, please consult a qualified mental health professional or doctor rather than relying solely on art.

Just like working out releases endorphins and clears your head, focusing on a creative hobby like art lowers your cortisol levels. It is basically a workout for your brain that helps you de-stress. Highly recommend adding some creative time to your daily routine alongside physical exercise.

Art is a form of dynamic meditation. When you focus on colors and shapes, your mind enters a state of flow, very similar to what we experience during deep pranayama or chanting. It gently brings your awareness to the present moment, calming the restless mind.

At this point in my life, buying fancy coloring books and coloring like a kid is my main escape from adult responsibilities! It keeps my hands busy so I am not scrolling through work emails, and honestly, it is cheaper than therapy.

I noticed my daughter becomes much calmer and expresses her feelings better when she sits down to paint after a stressful day at school. It gives children a safe space to process their daily anxieties without feeling judged. It has truly made a positive difference in our home.
