How does anesthetic put you to sleep?

My son recently had to undergo a procedure where he was given anesthesia, and it got me thinking. I understand it makes you unconscious, but how does the anesthetic actually work in the brain or body to put someone to sleep?

Actually, it just pauses your brain's pain signals, yaar. They inject it or give gas, and you are out in like five seconds without even realizing it. Quite cool how it works so fast!

I had general anesthesia during my appendix surgery last year. They asked me to count backwards from ten, and I think I only reached eight before I woke up in the recovery room. I didn't feel a single thing.

It temporarily blocks the nerve pathways so your brain doesn't register pain or consciousness. It is a controlled sleep monitored closely by doctors.

I am a bit scared about having to get this for a future procedure. Does it affect your breathing or heart while you are asleep, or do the machines take care of everything?

I totally get it, the thought of being put to sleep chemically can be very unsettling. It works by temporarily interrupting communication between your brain and nerve cells. Rest assured, qualified doctors are watching your vitals every single second.
