How does a fever blister start?

I woke up with this uncomfortable feeling on my lip, and it looks like a small bump is forming. My grandmother used to get fever blisters, and I'm wondering if this is how they typically start. Is there usually a tingling sensation beforehand?

Agree with others, it starts with a sudden tingling or burning sensation on the lip. Applying ice early during this tingling phase can sometimes reduce the swelling before the blister actually breaks out.

It usually starts when the dormant virus gets triggered by stress, sun exposure, or a cold. You'll feel a distinct itching or stinging spot on your lip, and within 24 hours, the red bumps start forming. Keep a soothing ointment handy.

It starts with this annoying, sneaky little itch on your lip that makes you think 'oh no, not again' at 2 AM. Before you can even sleep off the worry, you wake up looking like you got punched in the mouth.

In my experience, low immunity triggers them, which can happen if my sugar levels fluctuate. It starts with a tight, hot feeling on the skin. I make sure to avoid sugary foods during this time to keep my system strong and balanced.

I track my health metrics daily and noticed they usually pop up when my sleep quality drops or physical stress levels are high. It starts as a localized throbbing or burning sensation under the skin, then the redness appears.
