How do you know someone has mental health issues?

A friend of mine has been very withdrawn lately, not talking much, and seems constantly sad. I'm worried about her but don't know how to approach it. What are some common indicators that someone might be struggling with their mental health?

I went through a really dark phase myself, and the biggest sign was that I suddenly stopped talking to my friends and lost interest in everything I loved. If you notice someone becoming very quiet, skipping calls, or looking exhausted all the time, they might be struggling. Just reach out gently and let them know you are there.

While we can look for signs like sudden mood swings, withdrawal, or extreme anger, we shouldn't try to diagnose them ourselves. If you feel a family member is struggling, please gently suggest they talk to a certified therapist or psychiatrist. Getting professional help early is the safest way.

Listen, if someone who is usually active suddenly stops eating, sleeping, or starts crying over small things, don't just tell them to 'cheer up'. That doesn't work. Talk to them properly, ask what is bothering them, and support them in seeing a counselor if they need it.

For mild stress, drinking chamomile tea, sitting in nature, and sleeping on time can help a lot. But if someone is completely hopeless, crying constantly, or talking about giving up, home remedies won't cut it. They need to see a proper medical professional or therapist immediately.

As someone who regularly sleeps at 3 AM because my brain won't shut up, I can tell you that extreme changes in sleep patterns are a huge giveaway. If someone is suddenly sleeping 15 hours a day or not sleeping at all and looks like a zombie, their mental health might need a serious tune-up.

Chronic illnesses like diabetes can take a massive toll on mental health, causing burnout and severe anxiety. If you see someone struggling to manage their daily routine, skipping medications, or looking totally defeated, offer your support. Mental wellness is just as vital as physical parameters.

In college, we see this a lot during exams. If a friend suddenly stops attending lectures, locks themselves in their hostel room, or gets super irritated over tiny things, they are probably going through it. Just hanging out with them and offering a listening ear helps a lot.

I always worry when I see my loved ones acting differently, wondering if they are depressed or anxious. If they are sleeping too much, ignoring messages, or seem constantly distracted, it really could be a mental health struggle. Let's support them gently without judging.

In the gym, I often see guys who suddenly lose their drive, stop working out, or skip meals entirely when they are going through a mental struggle. Physical health and mental health are totally connected. If you notice a friend ignoring their physical health suddenly, check in on their mind too.

I ignored my sister's constant anxiety and weight loss for a year, thinking it was just work pressure, until she had a major breakdown. I deeply regret not taking it seriously earlier. If someone is showing extreme anxiety, mood changes, or withdrawal, please urge them to get a clinical checkup.
