How do you know if you have chronic kidney disease?

My blood pressure has been consistently high for a while, and I've also been feeling unusually tired and experiencing some swelling in my ankles. The doctor mentioned keeping an eye on my kidney health. What are the common symptoms that point towards chronic kidney disease?

If you are worried, just go to your nearby lab and ask for a blood creatinine and urine microalbumin test. They are very common, inexpensive tests and will give you a clear report within a day. Don't stress unnecessarily without reports.

Having PCOS has taught me that we shouldn't guess chronic conditions based on minor symptoms. Usually, early kidney disease has no signs, and things like swollen ankles or fatigue only show up much later. Getting a basic kidney function test (KFT) is the best way to be sure.

As a long-time diabetic, I have to get my kidney function checked every six months because high sugar can damage them over time. Early stages don't show any symptoms, so please don't wait for pain or swelling. Keep your sugars in check and get regular blood tests done.

My husband was diagnosed with kidney issues last year. He had no pain, just some puffiness around his eyes in the morning and foaming in his urine. I cannot advise on what you might have, but these were the exact signs in his case.

Please do not ignore signs like metallic taste in mouth, swelling in feet, or sudden changes in urination frequency. I delayed my checkup and ended up with severe complications that required immediate dialysis. Go see a nephrologist right away.
