How do sports affect mental health negatively?

Everyone always talks about the positive impact of sports on mental health, but I've seen some of my friends struggle with immense pressure from competition and performance. Sometimes it feels like it adds more stress than it relieves. What are some of the ways sports can actually affect mental health negatively?

I used to play competitive badminton in college, and the constant pressure to win really ruined my mental health for a while. The fear of failure and letting down my coach was so exhausting. It is important to play for fun sometimes, not just for medals.

I totally get it, sports can sometimes become a huge source of anxiety instead of stress relief. When your self-worth is entirely tied to performance, even a minor loss can feel like a personal tragedy. It's very common to feel overwhelmed by that level of competition.

Honestly, the only negative mental health impact of sports for me is when my favorite cricket team loses a match in the last over! But seriously, if you play too hard, body fatigue can make you super cranky and sleep-deprived. Balance is everything, buddy.

Haan na, the pressure can be too much sometimes. Especially when parents or coaches push children too hard, it stops being a game and feels like a stressful job. We need to remember that sports are meant to keep us happy, not give us panic attacks.

I went through severe athletic burnout during my boxing days. My advice is to set strict boundaries between your personal identity and your sport. Learn to take rest days seriously and talk to a sports psychologist if the anxiety starts affecting your sleep.

I can only speak from my own experience of playing state-level football. The physical burnout often led to intense mood swings and a feeling of emptiness when the season ended. Taking a complete break and just walking in the park helped me recover my mental peace.
