How do kidney stones work?

My uncle suffers from kidney stones quite often, and it always sounds very serious. I want to understand what kidney stones actually are and how they form to cause such issues. What's the basic mechanism behind them?

It is honestly so stressful when you first start reading about this, I lost sleep thinking about how stones form inside us. Basically, when certain minerals in your pee get super concentrated, they stick together and form crystals. Don't stress too much, just focusing on drinking enough water helps keep those minerals diluted.

These stones are basically hard mineral deposits that build up inside your kidneys when urine becomes too concentrated. It can cause serious blockage if left ignored. It is always safest to get an ultrasound done if you suspect anything, rather than waiting for severe pain to start.

Please do not start drinking random plant juices or home remedies you see on YouTube to dissolve them. They form when waste products in your blood don't dissolve properly in your urine. Only a proper urologist can tell you what type of stone it is and how to treat it safely.

Look, don't worry, it sounds scarier than it is. Think of it like salt crystals forming when water evaporates, that is exactly how minerals build up in the kidney. Just make sure you are drinking plenty of water throughout the day, and you will be absolutely fine.

They start as tiny crystals but can grow large enough to block your urine flow entirely. Mine got so big it caused severe swelling in my kidney and I needed emergency surgery. Please don't ignore mild side aches, get a doctor to check it out early.

I read that they can be made of calcium or uric acid, but does anyone else get super anxious just thinking about it? I always worry if my lower back pain is a stone starting to form. How do you guys manage to stay calm and tell the difference between normal muscle pain and kidney pain?

Actually, my dad had this last year. When you don't drink enough water, the calcium and oxalate in your body don't wash out and they clump together to form these little stones. It is just a sign that your body needs way more hydration, so keep sipping water!
