How do doctors diagnose kidney stones?

My brother had really bad pain in his side and back last week, and the doctor said it might be kidney stones. I'm curious, what are the definitive tests doctors use to confirm a diagnosis of kidney stones? How do they make sure?

I have had kidney stones twice, so I know the drill. The doctor will order an ultrasound of your KUB area (Kidneys, Ureter, and Bladder) and a basic urine test. My tip is to drink some water before the ultrasound because they need your bladder to be full for a clear picture.

They basically use high-tech cameras to look for tiny rocks hiding inside you! Usually, a quick ultrasound or CT scan is all it takes to find the culprits. It is a painless photo session for your insides, so don't worry about the diagnosis.

I literally just got cleared of my stone last week. They did a non-contrast CT scan of my abdomen, which is super accurate for finding even tiny stones. The scan takes less than ten minutes, and it gives the doctor the exact map of where the stone is.

At the hospital, they explained that a CT scan or ultrasound is the best way to confirm kidney stones. I suggest asking your urologist to explain the size and location of the stone from the scan reports. That way, you will know exactly what the next steps are.

When my teenage son had sudden severe pain, the doctors did an ultrasound scan and checked his urine for any blood or infection. It was a very smooth and quick process, and knowing the exact stone size helped us treat it correctly. Just stay calm and get the scan done.
