How do doctors check for asthma?

My son sometimes struggles to breathe, especially after playing or during dust. My neighbor mentioned it could be asthma. I just want to understand what tests the doctor might do to confirm it, so I am prepared.

Honestly, when I went to get my breathing checked, I thought they would tell me to cut down on my oily samosas first. But the doc actually made me blow into this machine called a spirometer to check my lung capacity. It felt like trying to blow out birthday candles after a heavy dinner, simple but quite effective.

Beta, don't worry about these tests. Back in our day, we didn't have such fancy machines, but now doctors do a quick breathing test and maybe some allergy checks. It is all very painless and gets done in a few minutes, so go get it checked without any fear.

I have been dealing with asthma for ten years now. They will most likely do a spirometry test where you take a deep breath and blow hard into a tube. Sometimes they give you an inhaler and test again after 15 minutes to see if your breathing improves. Just be relaxed during the test or the readings can vary.

Agree with the others, it is mostly just a lung function test. Make sure you don't use any inhaler right before the test so the doctor gets an accurate baseline.

I remember crying before my first checkup because I was constantly wheezing and felt so helpless. The doctor was very patient and did a simple spirometry test and checked my symptoms. Knowing what it was actually brought me so much peace, so please don't hesitate to go.

Listen, there is absolutely nothing to be scared of. The doctor will listen to your chest with a stethoscope and ask you to blow into a small device. It is a very basic process to see how well your lungs are working. Just take a deep breath and let the doc guide you through it.

My grandmother used to suggest warm ginger water and tulsi for my constant coughing, which is good for relief. But for proper diagnosis, we went to our family doctor who did a proper lung capacity check. It is always better to trust the clinical tests first to get the right treatment.
