How do cavities work?

My child asked me about cavities today, and I realized I don't fully understand the science behind them. Can someone explain the basic mechanism of how they develop and 'work' to damage teeth?

They work by slowly breaking down the mineral structure of your tooth through acid erosion. Just like keeping your muscles active with a daily run, keeping your saliva flowing by drinking lots of water helps neutralize these harmful acids naturally.

Don't fall for YouTube videos claiming you can reverse a deep cavity with turmeric or coconut oil. Cavities work by physical decay of the enamel, and once a hole forms, it cannot grow back. You must go to a certified dentist to get it cleaned and filled.

I ignored a tiny cavity thinking it was harmless, but it reached the root and caused a massive jaw infection. It is a slow, silent process that suddenly turns extremely painful. Please see a doctor or dentist before it gets that bad.

They work by decaying the outer layers first and then targeting the inner nerve. Since dry mouth from my thyroid meds makes me more prone to this, I keep up with regular dental checkups along with my endocrine tests. Regular monitoring is the only way.

They basically drill a slow hole in your tooth. The bacteria eat your leftover food, poop out acid, and that acid eats your tooth. Had to get two fillings last month because of this exact cycle.

Haan, basically jab mouth ka acid enamel ko melt karta hai tabhi cavity banti hai na. Agar time pe dhyan nahi diya toh dard badhta hi jayega. Isliye zyada sweet khaane ke baad kulla zaroor kiya karo.

They slowly rot the tooth from the outside in. In our days, we rinsed with warm salt water to keep the mouth clean, which is still good for gums, but for a real cavity, you must go to a dentist to stop the decay.

They work like tiny, invisible construction workers digging a hole in your tooth! The bacteria use the sugar we eat to make acid, which weakens the enamel. Rinsing after snacks keeps them away! 😊
