How do albatross sleep?

Watching a documentary about albatrosses, I saw how long they fly. It made me wonder how these birds manage to get any sleep while being out at sea for so long. Do they sleep while flying or something?

I have spent years studying marine biology and watching these birds. Albatrosses actually sleep while flying, utilizing a process called unihemispheric slow-wave sleep where only half of their brain rests at a time. They also sleep floating on the water surface when the seas are calm, though it is riskier for them.

This reminds me of when I completely ignored my own severe sleep issues and ended up with chronic fatigue. If you are asking because you are having trouble sleeping or researching sleep patterns, please consult a specialist before it affects your health. Don't ignore poor sleep like I did.

It is honestly so fascinating how they can sleep while soaring in the air. As someone who has struggled with severe insomnia for years, I sometimes wish human brains could also rest in parts while we go about our day. Nature has such beautiful ways of adapting to difficult environments.

I read that they take micro-naps of just a few seconds while gliding over the ocean, which sounds so exhausting to me! I constantly worry about getting my full 8 hours of sleep, so thinking about a bird sleeping mid-air makes me so anxious. But don't worry, their bodies are perfectly designed for it by nature.

These big sea birds are amazing, they can sleep while flying high in the sky over the oceans. God has given them a special power to keep one eye open and half their mind awake so they don't fall down. It is very beautiful to think about how they live.

I was just reading about this and I heard they can fly for days without landing, even sleeping in the air. Is it true that they never crash while sleeping fly? I am really curious to know how their wings stay locked in place.
