How can you catch diabetes?

My uncle was recently diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, and it made me wonder about the causes. I always thought it was something older people get, but his lifestyle is quite active. What are the common ways a person actually 'catches' diabetes, or is it more genetic?

You don't 'catch' diabetes like a cold, but you can develop it slowly without even realizing it. I ignored my constant fatigue, weight gain, and frequent urination for almost two years thinking it was just work stress. Please get a simple fasting blood glucose test done if you notice these signs.

Diabetes is mostly about your genetics and lifestyle habits, not something contagious. I tried all sorts of home remedies like methi seeds and bitter gourd juice to prevent it since my father had it, but ultimately, balanced eating and regular walks are what keep it at bay.

As someone living with PCOS, I know that insulin resistance can silently build up in the body and lead to Type 2 diabetes if not managed. It's not something you catch, but rather something your body struggles with due to hormonal imbalances. Regular doctor visits and thyroid/sugar tests are really helpful.

Having thyroid issues myself, my doctor always warns me that metabolic conditions are often linked. You don't catch it, but if you have autoimmune issues or a family history, you are at a higher risk. I highly recommend getting a thyroid profile and HbA1c test done annually.

I completely understand why you might feel anxious about this, especially with so much conflicting info online. Rest assured, you cannot catch diabetes from someone else. It's mostly related to how your pancreas works, genetics, and daily lifestyle, so try not to stress too much.

Exactly, it is not an infectious disease. Regular yearly health checkups are the only way to catch it early before it causes damage.

I totally get it, when a family member gets diagnosed, we all start worrying if we will get it too. Since it is hereditary and lifestyle-based, the best we can do is focus on eating healthy and keeping our weight in check. Don't worry, just focus on small daily habits.
