How can i tell if i've had a stroke?

Yesterday, I suddenly felt one side of my face go numb for a few minutes, and my speech was a bit slurred. It passed quickly, but now I'm worried. How can I tell if what I experienced was a mini-stroke or something serious?

If you notice sudden severe headache, dizziness, or trouble walking, do not wait for a local clinic to open. Call an ambulance or hire a cab to the nearest large hospital with a scan facility.

When my colleague had a stroke, his face suddenly drooped on one side when he tried to smile. We immediately took him to the ER, which is the only right thing to do.

I once had sudden numbness due to a pinched nerve and panicked thinking it was a stroke. But since stroke is a major medical emergency, it is always best to let doctors in an ER check you immediately.
