How big is a big kidney stone?
Many people in my family have had kidney stones, and they always talk about 'big' ones. I'm curious, what do doctors consider a really big kidney stone? Is there a typical size range that gets labelled as 'big'?

Generally, any kidney stone larger than 6 mm or 7 mm is considered big because it has a very low chance of passing naturally. If a stone is 1 cm or more, it can block the kidney and cause damage. Please get an ultrasound and consult a urologist to ensure your kidneys are safe.
My doctor at the hospital told me that stones over 10 mm (1 cm) are definitely big and usually need lithotripsy or surgery. I always advise going to a reputable hospital and asking your urologist clearly about the size and position. They will give you the most accurate solution based on your scan.
A big stone is usually anything 1 cm or more, and honestly, the pain and anxiety it causes can be totally draining. I remember crying for days out of fear of surgery when they found my 12 mm stone. It is completely okay to feel overwhelmed, but getting it treated will bring so much relief.
Listen, anything above 8 mm to 10 mm is usually called a big stone, but don't let that scare you. Even large stones are very easily treated nowadays with simple, non-invasive procedures. Just take deep breaths, avoid trying random remedies, and we will get a good doctor to look at it.
I completely understand how terrifying it is to hear you might have a 'big' stone; my heart used to race just thinking about it. Medically, stones over 7-8 mm are considered large because they get stuck easily. Your anxiety is very valid, but please talk to a doctor who can explain the scan and calm your fears.
