How bad is stage 4 kidney failure?

My husband's kidney condition has worsened, and he's now diagnosed with stage 4 kidney failure. We are very worried about what this means for his health. How serious is stage 4 kidney failure, and what are the typical challenges faced?

I completely understand the absolute terror and panic you must be feeling after hearing 'stage 4 kidney failure'. It is incredibly scary and your anxiety is completely valid. Please know that even at this advanced stage, there are medical treatments and dialysis options that help people live for many years.

Stage 4 kidney failure indicates a severe decrease in GFR (15-29), meaning your kidneys are close to failing completely. Rather than trying unverified alternative therapies, a consultation with a qualified nephrologist to plan for dialysis or a transplant is the safest and most rational approach.

I was at stage 4 kidney failure last year with extreme fatigue and swelling. Getting a proper dialysis routine started and eventually going for a transplant completely changed my life and got me back on my feet. It is a tough journey, but there is definitely hope and a way forward.

At stage 4, your kidneys are barely filtering waste, so you need to be extremely cautious about what you eat and drink. Avoid taking any over-the-counter pain relievers or herbal supplements, as they can cause sudden, total kidney shutdown. Keep a close check on your potassium levels with your doctor.

My grandmother had stage 4 kidney issues and we had to be extremely careful with her daily fluid intake and diet. It is a serious stage, but with a strict low-potassium, low-sodium diet and proper medication, you can manage the symptoms well. Sending you and your family lots of warmth.

I have seen many people in my life manage kidney issues for years with patience and discipline. While stage 4 is a very advanced and serious condition, modern medicine has excellent ways to manage it and keep you comfortable. Keep your courage high and trust your doctors.
