How are newborns supposed to sleep?

Just welcomed our little one home, and sleep has been a real challenge. I want to make sure we're doing everything right for the baby's safety. What is the recommended way for newborns to sleep, especially their position and environment?

Honestly, they are supposed to sleep on their backs on a flat, firm mattress, but they prefer sleeping on your chest the exact second you try to close your eyes. Just keep their crib completely empty—no pillows, no stuffed toys, nothing. Good luck, you're going to need lots of coffee!

I remember crying in the middle of the night because my baby wouldn't sleep in the crib at all, it was so emotionally draining. Just know that you are doing great. The safest way is always on their back on a flat surface, even if they wake up every two hours.

Take a deep breath, you've got this. Newborns must always sleep on their back on a firm, flat surface to prevent any choking hazards. Avoid using soft pillows, heavy blankets, or loose toys in their bed, and they will be perfectly safe.

Don't spend money on fancy baby beds or expensive swaddles. Just use a simple, firm mattress on a flat cot, and always put the baby on their back to sleep. Keep the room temperature comfortable and don't cover their head, that's more than enough.

When planning for a newborn, skip those expensive smart cribs and sleep trackers that cost a bomb. A basic, sturdy wooden crib with a flat, firm mattress is the safest and most economical option. Always lay them on their back, which is completely free and pediatrician-approved.

In our time, we gently swaddled the baby in a soft, clean cotton cloth, which kept them feeling secure and warm. But always remember, the baby must lie flat on their back, never on their stomach. A light mustard seed pillow can be used to keep their head shape, but check with your doctor first.
