Does your heart stop during a heart attack?

In movies, it often looks like someone's heart just stops completely during a heart attack, and they collapse. My friend was saying that's not exactly how it works. So, does your heart actually stop beating during a heart attack, or is that a myth?

I had a heart attack last year and my heart did not stop—it was beating, but the blood flow was blocked, which caused intense pain. People confuse it with cardiac arrest where the heart actually stops. If you feel that heavy pressure, go to the hospital immediately.

Actually, medically, a heart attack is a 'plumbing' issue where an artery is blocked, so the heart keeps beating. A cardiac arrest is an 'electrical' issue where the heart suddenly stops. Either way, any severe chest discomfort means you need to head to the ER instantly.

When my husband had his episode, the cardiologists at the hospital explained that the heart keeps pumping during an attack but gets damaged. It is best to ask your doctor to explain these symptoms clearly during your next checkup so you know exactly what to look for.

My family has a history of heart issues, and we learned that the heart doesn't stop during an attack, but it is under severe stress. If anyone around you complains of sudden chest pressure or difficulty breathing, please take them to a doctor without any delay.

I love my butter chicken, but knowing that a heart attack can happen while the heart is still beating made me realize how sneaky it is. If you feel sudden pain or sweating, don't wait around thinking it's just heavy food—get checked at a clinic right away.

No, the heart usually doesn't stop during a heart attack, but it can lead to cardiac arrest if untreated. If you experience severe chest pain, numbness in the arm, or sweating, call an ambulance immediately. Do not delay.
