Does your blood pressure drop when you sleep?

I've started monitoring my blood pressure at home because of slightly elevated readings. I've noticed my readings are lowest right after I wake up. Is it normal for blood pressure to drop quite a bit during sleep?

Yes, it is completely normal for blood pressure to drop slightly when you are sleeping. This is called nocturnal dipping and it shows your body is relaxing. Rest well and don't worry too much about it.

Yes, a 10% to 20% drop in blood pressure during sleep is standard and healthy. As someone managing hypertension, my doctor told me that if it doesn't drop, it can put extra strain on the heart. Make sure you don't take heavy dinners or caffeine right before sleeping.

While a normal drop is healthy, a very drastic drop or no drop at all can sometimes indicate underlying cardiovascular issues. I ignored my weird blood pressure readings for a long time until it became a chronic problem. Please get a 24-hour ambulatory BP monitor test done if you have doubts.

I wish I slept enough to even measure my sleeping blood pressure! But yes, biologically, your heart takes a break and your BP dips. Now if only my brain would also dip its stress levels at night, that would be great.

I checked my BP on a home monitor right after waking up and it was quite low, which made me feel a bit anxious. Is it normal for everyone to have lower readings in the morning compared to the afternoon? Would love to know if others see this.

Haan, bilkul normal hai yeh toh. Jab hum sote hain, hamari body fully relax karti hai, isliye BP thoda kam ho jata hai. Agar din me high rehta hai, toh doctor se checkup karwa lena chahiye, na?

Yes, it does! Your body goes into recovery mode, so your heart rate and BP naturally go down to let you rest deeply. It is a sign of a healthy sleep cycle. Sleep tight!
