Does yoga help arthritis?

My knees have been bothering me a lot lately because of arthritis. My doctor suggested some light exercise, and a friend recommended trying yoga. Will it actually help with the pain and stiffness, or make it worse?

I am also thinking of starting yoga for my joint stiffness, but I am a bit scared. Does it stretch the joints too much and cause more pain initially? If anyone who has arthritis does yoga, please tell me which simple poses are safe to begin with.

Please don't start any yoga posture just by watching random videos on YouTube. Some twists and stretches can actually worsen your joint inflammation and damage cartilage. You must show your reports to an orthopedic doctor or a certified physiotherapist before doing anything.

Yes, it absolutely works, but you have to do modified yoga. You can't just jump into hard poses. Go for gentle hatha yoga or chair yoga to build mobility and strength around the joints. It has worked wonders for my mother's knee pain.

My rheumatologist specifically suggested gentle yoga stretches because they improve synovial fluid circulation in the joints. However, the doctor strictly warned against putting direct body weight on inflamed joints during flare-ups. Always use props like blocks or cushions for support.

Haan na, yoga definitely helps to keep the body flexible. My aunt has joint pain and she does very light breathing and joint rotation exercises daily. Thoda relief toh milta hai, physically and mentally also. But heavy aasanas bilkul mat karna.
