Does vomiting cause metabolic alkalosis?

I was reading about electrolyte imbalances and metabolic changes in the body. I remember learning that severe vomiting can lead to metabolic alkalosis. Is this generally true, and what's the primary reason behind that change?

Yes, it does. My gastroenterologist at Max Hospital explained that losing gastric acid during severe vomiting leads to metabolic alkalosis. If you are throwing up continuously, please consult your doctor to get your blood gas levels checked.

Yes, it can cause metabolic alkalosis because of the loss of acid. Since my body is already sensitive due to PCOS, I try to take plenty of rest and sip warm water with salt when I feel nauseous to keep my system steady.

My son had severe stomach flu last year and the doctor told us his body had gone into mild alkalosis due to continuous vomiting. We kept giving him tiny sips of electrolyte water every ten minutes, and that helped him recover without hospital stay.

I didn't know that throwing up could affect our blood chemistry like this. Does this metabolic alkalosis happen even if we vomit just once or twice, or only during severe food poisoning?

Yes, because the body loses stomach acid when you throw up. Just keep drinking ORS water or simple salt-sugar water at home to keep your electrolytes in balance until you recover.
