Does underactive thyroid cause bloating?

My thyroid levels have been a bit off lately, and I've noticed a constant feeling of bloating. My mother also has thyroid issues and she said it can cause this. Can an underactive thyroid actually cause such bloating?

Yes, it absolutely does. When the thyroid is underactive, it slows down your metabolism, which directly affects your digestion and causes bloating. Just like managing my blood pressure, you need regular lifestyle changes, salt control, and routine checkups to keep everything in balance.

Omg yes! My roommate has hypothyroid and she literally complains about bloating after almost every meal, even if she just eats light salad. It's like her digestion goes into slow-motion. Totally relatable and very common!

Having guided many people on this forum, I can tell you that a slow thyroid leads to slow gut motility, which causes constipation and severe bloating. Drinking warm water, eating smaller fiber-rich meals, and taking your thyroid medicine on an empty stomach in the morning will really help.

It definitely slows down your gut transit time, leading to that heavy, bloated feeling. If your doctor allows, try incorporating a brisk 30-minute walk after your meals. Keeping your body moving is one of the easiest ways to get your digestive system active again.

Underactive thyroid sluggishness can indeed cause gas and bloating in the abdomen. Along with your regular medication, practicing gentle yoga poses like Pawanmuktasana and deep pranayama can help stimulate your abdominal organs and improve your digestion naturally.

Don't start taking random herbal digestion drinks or internet remedies to cure this bloating. Underactive thyroid is a medical hormone deficiency. Go get your T3, T4, and TSH levels tested and let an endocrinologist adjust your daily dosage.
