Does ultraviolet light cause skin cancer?

I spend a lot of time outdoors because of my work, and I'm always worried about sun exposure. Someone told me that ultraviolet light can actually cause skin cancer. Is this true, and how much exposure is too much?

I totally get it, reading about skin cancer and UV light can be really scary and overwhelming. Yes, prolonged and unprotected exposure to UV rays from the sun is a primary cause. Please don't stress too much, just wearing a good sunscreen daily can protect you really well.

I am just starting to learn about skin care and this sounds really concerning. Does this mean even the UV nail lamps used for gel manicures in parlors are dangerous for our skin? I would appreciate if someone could guide me on this.

I was just reading some articles on this because of the extreme heatwaves we are having. From what I found, both UVA and UVB rays damage the DNA in our skin cells, which can lead to skin cancer over time. It's a very real risk, especially with our strong Indian summer sun.

Yes, it absolutely does. I recently had a suspicious mole removed that was caused by years of sun exposure without protection, thankfully it was caught early. Please take sun safety seriously and never skip your SPF, even on cloudy days.

It definitely does, especially over the long term. Having dealt with precancerous skin spots myself, I can tell you that prevention is key. Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher, wear a wide-brimmed hat, and avoid the peak afternoon sun between 12 to 3 PM.
