Does type 1 diabetes qualify for social security disability?

Living with Type 1 diabetes since I was a teenager, sometimes managing my blood sugar levels and insulin injections throughout the day becomes very difficult, especially with work. I'm wondering if Type 1 diabetes could qualify for any kind of social security disability benefits here in India.

In the Indian context, there isn't a direct 'social security' monthly payout for Type 1 unless there is a very high percentage of physical disability from complications. Honestly, the best defense is to keep your body strong. I focus heavily on strength training and a high-protein, low-carb diet to keep my insulin requirements stable and stay active.

It is hard to get official benefits for this, but keeping ourselves physically fit helps avoid the complications that lead to actual disability. I make sure to go for a brisk 40-minute walk every single evening after checking my levels. Just make sure your doctor agrees with your exercise routine first.

Since financial aid from the government is rare for Type 1, we have to save costs where we can by managing our health naturally alongside insulin. I focus on a clean vegetarian diet with lots of green vegetables, fiber, and whole grains to keep my sugar spikes low. Proper diet really helps in reducing the overall doctor visits and extra medicine costs.

I completely understand how stressful this is, the constant fear of lows and the endless expense can make anyone feel anxious and overwhelmed. It is totally valid to look for financial support like disability schemes because this condition takes a huge mental and financial toll. I hope you find some good resources soon.

I can only share what happened in my family. My nephew tried to apply for disability benefits under a state government scheme, but his application was rejected because he didn't have any severe organ damage or vision loss. It seems the criteria are very strict and mostly cover extreme cases.

My endocrinologist explained that under Indian law, Type 1 diabetes is not automatically considered a disability. However, if the condition has caused diabetic retinopathy or neuropathy that severely affects your working capacity, you can apply for a disability certificate at a government hospital. You will need detailed medical reports and a certified assessment from a medical board.
