Does tricare cover skin removal after weight loss?

After losing a lot of weight through diet and exercise, I'm left with excess skin which is causing discomfort and rashes. I'm wondering if such skin removal surgery is typically covered by health insurance. For example, does a plan like Tricare cover it?

Congrats on your weight loss! Tricare does cover skin removal, but usually only if it is medically necessary, like if you have chronic rashes or infections in the skin folds. Definitely worth checking with your doctor!

Yes, they cover it, but only if you have documented medical complications like severe skin infections from the loose skin.

Tricare will only cover a panniculectomy if the hanging skin causes medical issues like recurrent fungal infections or severe chafing that doesn't respond to creams. Purely cosmetic skin removal is not covered, so make sure your doctor documents your physical symptoms carefully.

Losing so much weight is a big achievement, beta. For the loose skin and rashes, you must apply pure coconut oil or aloe vera gel daily to soothe the skin folds. If the trouble is too much, then you must ask your doctor about the surgery options they cover.

Since Tricare is very strict, get your doctor to document every single skin infection or rash visit over several months. This paper trail is absolutely free and will save you lakhs in out-of-pocket surgery costs when submitting the insurance claim.
