Does taking a fever reducer prolong illness?

My son has a fever, and I've given him some fever reducer. My mother-in-law believes that taking medicine might prolong the actual illness. Does taking a fever reducer prolong illness, or is that a myth?

There is a minor medical debate that suppressing a mild fever might slightly delay the immune response, but in reality, taking a fever reducer makes the patient comfortable and prevents dehydration. It is best to follow your doctor's specific advice.

Fever is the body's natural fire fighting the illness, so let it rest and recover. However, if the discomfort is too high, there is no harm in taking a mild medicine to calm the body so you can sleep peacefully.

No need to overthink this. If the fever is keeping you from eating and resting, take the paracetamol. Getting sleep and staying hydrated is what actually helps you recover faster.

Please don't delay taking medication or seeking help trying to let the fever 'run its course.' I once ignored a rising fever thinking it would go away, and ended up with severe pneumonia. Get a doctor's opinion early.

If I don't take a Crocin, my wife says I groan like a giant baby! Honestly, getting some relief doesn't prolong the illness, it just saves your family from your constant complaining.
