Does swimming improve asthma?

I've had asthma since childhood and am always looking for ways to manage it better. I've heard that swimming can be good for lung health. Does swimming actually improve asthma symptoms?

It definitely helped me, bro. The moist air right above the pool water makes it way easier to breathe than running outside in the Delhi pollution. Just keep your inhaler by the poolside just in case you feel tight, but usually, it's very safe.

In my youth, my asthma was quite bad and my father pushed me to start swimming in the local river. Over the years, my lung capacity improved tremendously and I rarely needed my inhaler. It is a slow process, but it definitely helps if you stay consistent.

Asthma can be unpredictable, so please do not start any new cardio exercise without talking to your pulmonologist first. The strong smell of chlorine in some indoor pools can actually trigger a sudden attack in sensitive people. Get a green light from your doctor first.

Well, trying to swim with asthma felt like I was a fish out of water at first! But honestly, once you get the breathing rhythm right, it does make your lungs stronger. Just don't try to compete with teenagers, take it easy.

Medical studies generally show that swimming is one of the best exercises for asthmatics because the warm, humid air reduces airway hyper-responsiveness. However, pool maintenance standards vary, and high chlorine levels can be an irritant. It's best to consult your doctor to tailor a safe exercise plan.
