Does sweet tea cause kidney stones?

I'm a big fan of sweet tea and drink it almost daily. A friend of mine recently developed kidney stones, and he mentioned it could be related to sweet tea. Does sweet tea cause kidney stones?

Hello, I am new to this group and just started learning about diet changes. I actually drink iced tea almost every day afternoon. Does anyone know if cutting down the sugar helps, or is it the tea leaves themselves that cause the problem? Sorry if this is a silly question, just a bit worried.

Honestly, please be very careful with this. I ignored my regular sweet tea habit and ended up in the hospital with a massive 8mm stone that required surgery. Black tea has oxalates which can really trigger stones if you don't drink enough water. Please go consult a urologist and get an ultrasound done if you are feeling any side pain.

My son had severe stomach pain last year and doctor said it was a small stone due to dehydration and too much bottled sweet tea. I completely stopped giving him outside drinks and now I make fresh lemonade or simple warm water with lemon at home. Keep your kids hydrated with plain water, that is the safest way.

I was actually reading some health blogs about this yesterday because my dad loves his sweet chai. Apparently, high sugar increases calcium in urine, and tea has oxalates, which together is like the perfect formula for stones. Quite scary how our everyday habits can affect us so much.

Boss, black tea is full of oxalates and sugar makes it worse, of course it can lead to stones if you drink it like water. Limit it to one small cup a day and start drinking 3 liters of plain water daily. No rocket science here, just stop the excess sweet drinks and you will be fine.

I always go to Kokilaben Hospital for my annual checkups and my doctor there clearly told me that every body reacts differently to oxalates. Instead of guessing online, just visit a good general physician or nephrologist. They will do a simple urine test and tell you exactly what your body can tolerate.

Any kind of body imbalance needs regular monitoring. Just like I have to keep checking my thyroid levels every three months, you should get a basic renal function test and urine analysis done if you suspect kidney issues. Don't make assumptions on your own, just get the tests done and let a doctor guide you on what to drink.
