Does sweat cause dandruff?

I'm quite active and tend to sweat a lot, especially on my scalp. Lately, I've noticed more dandruff. I was wondering if sweat can actually cause dandruff or make it worse.

Actually, sweat itself doesn't cause it, but it creates a damp environment where the fungus that causes dandruff grows faster. Wash your hair regularly after heavy sweating.

I had a similar issue and when I visited my dermatologist, they explained that sweat mixed with scalp oils makes dandruff worse. It is best to consult a good specialist to get the right medicated shampoo rather than trying random things.

Oh, I totally feel you! After workout sessions, my scalp gets so itchy and flaky if I do not wash it. I started rinsing my hair with plain water at least, and it honestly made a big difference.

In our days, we used to wash our head with normal shikakai after working in the fields. Keeping the hair dry and clean is the basic rule, as excess sweat always brings itching and scalp troubles.

Sweat just acts as food for the Malassezia fungus which is already on our scalp. Just try to use a mild ketoconazole shampoo twice a week if it is bad, and don't let sweat sit on your scalp for hours.

Don't start putting random lemon juice or curd on your head because of online posts, it can irritate the scalp more. Get a proper diagnosis from a skin doctor to know if it is dry scalp or actual fungal dandruff.

Yes, high humidity and sweat can trigger skin issues, and if you have fluctuating blood sugars, fungal infections can flare up even more easily. Make sure to keep your scalp dry and keep your diet clean and low in processed sugars.
