Does sugar free gum prevent cavities?

My dentist always recommends chewing sugar-free gum after meals to protect my teeth. I've always assumed it helps. Can sugar-free gum really prevent cavities, or is it just a myth? How effective is it actually?

Chewing sugar-free gum can help clean your teeth after eating by increasing saliva, which is really good. But please don't let it replace your daily brushing and flossing habits. Take care of your beautiful smile.

I used to chew sugar-free gum thinking it protects my teeth, and ignored a slight toothache until it became a major infection requiring surgery. Don't rely on gum to save your teeth. Go for a proper dental checkup regularly instead of self-managing.

I chew sugar-free gum sometimes to manage sweet cravings, and it does help with saliva flow which dentists say protects enamel. However, I try not to overdo it because artificial sweeteners can sometimes affect gut health, which is sensitive in PCOS. It is all about finding a gentle balance.

Beta, these modern gums might help a little, but nothing beats rinsing your mouth with warm water and a little salt after every meal. In our village, we used neem twigs to clean teeth, which kept them strong for years. If you have real tooth pain, go see a proper dentist.

My dentist actually recommended chewing sugar-free gum with xylitol after lunch when I am on campus and can't brush. It helps clear out food particles and keeps the mouth fresh. It is a super easy hack for college students who are always on the go.
