Does stroke patients sleep a lot?

My father, who had a stroke a few months back, seems to sleep an awful lot during the day. We're constantly trying to wake him up for physio. Is it common for stroke patients to sleep a lot, or should we be worried about this much drowsiness?

Yes, it is very common for stroke patients to sleep a lot. The brain needs a huge amount of rest to heal and recover from the injury, so letting them sleep peacefully is very important.

Sleeping a lot is a natural part of the recovery process after a stroke because the brain is working hard to rebuild pathways. However, make sure they are waking up easily to eat, drink, and take their medicines, and discuss it with their doctor if they seem unresponsive.

Yes! Sleeping is like a superpower for the brain to rebuild itself after a stroke. Just make sure they are getting good nutrition when they are awake, and let their body do its natural healing work.

Having survived a minor stroke last year, I can tell you the exhaustion is real. I would feel completely wiped out after doing even tiny tasks like holding a cup, and had to sleep a lot. It is just the brain's way of repairing itself, so don't worry.

My uncle slept almost 15 to 16 hours a day in the first few months after his stroke. The doctors told us it was completely normal because the brain gets exhausted trying to recover. Just make sure they stay hydrated when they wake up.
