Does spinach cause kidney stones?

My husband had kidney stones a few years ago, and our doctor advised us to be careful with oxalate-rich foods. I love eating spinach (palak), but I heard it can contribute to kidney stones. Does spinach really cause kidney stones?

Yes, spinach is very high in oxalates, which can cause calcium oxalate kidney stones if you have them daily. My realistic tip from experience is to boil or blanch the spinach to reduce oxalate levels, and always drink plenty of water throughout the day.

Treating kidney stones can be very expensive with hospital bills and scans. If you are prone to stones, it is better to plan your diet practically; limit spinach to once a week and get a cheap routine urine analysis done to check for oxalate crystals.

Oh god, I love palak paneer but this makes me so anxious because kidney stones sound incredibly painful! I read that pairing spinach with calcium-rich food like paneer actually helps bind the oxalates in the gut instead of the kidneys. Is that true? Hope we are safe!

If you are experiencing any sharp side or back pain, or pain during urination, please get it checked by a urologist immediately. While diet like spinach plays a role, kidney stones need proper medical evaluation and ultrasound scans for safety.

Spinach is excellent for managing blood sugar levels, but if you have a history of kidney stones, you must be careful. I eat it in moderate quantities and ensure my daily fluid intake is very high. Balancing both diabetes and stone prevention is important.

I panicked and completely stopped eating green vegetables after a small stone scare last year. Later, my doctor reassured me that normal home-cooked palak occasionally is perfectly fine as long as I don't dehydrate. No need to worry so much.

Spinach does contain oxalates, but it won't give you kidney stones unless you are highly prone to them or eating it in crazy amounts daily. Just don't overdo it, drink your water, and you will be completely fine.
