Does sleeping on your back cause sleep paralysis?

A few times now, I've had sleep paralysis, and it's always when I'm sleeping on my back. Is there a connection here? Does sleeping on your back cause sleep paralysis to happen more often?

I totally get it, waking up unable to move is such an incredibly frightening experience. Research actually shows that sleeping on your back makes sleep paralysis much more likely to happen. Trying to sleep on your side might really help prevent this.

I used to get sleep paralysis frequently when sleeping on my back, but it turned out to be connected to my underlying sleep apnea issue. If you are experiencing this very often or having trouble breathing at night, please do not ignore it. It is best to consult a sleep specialist to get a proper evaluation.

Yes, it actually does! Most of my sleep paralysis episodes happened when I was sleeping flat on my back. Just try sleeping on your side from tonight and don't stress too much about it, you will be fine.

Beta, in our traditional teachings, we are always advised to sleep on our left side to help digestion and keep the mind peaceful. Sleeping flat on the back can sometimes cause bad dreams or heavy breathing. Try changing your sleeping posture and see if you feel better.

There is a strong link between back sleeping and sleep paralysis because of how it affects your airways. A simple solution is to keep a long pillow next to you so you don't roll onto your back while sleeping. It is an easy trick that worked wonders for my family.
