Does sleep deprivation cause diarrhea?

I've been traveling a lot for work, which has really messed up my sleep schedule, and now I'm also having frequent loose stools. I'm trying to figure out the cause. Is it possible that sleep deprivation can lead to diarrhea?

For me, whenever I sleep for less than 5 hours, my stomach gets totally upset the next morning. It might not happen to everyone, but there is definitely a connection for my body.

My son gets loose motions every time he stays up late studying for exams. I always give him simple dahi-chawal and make sure he sleeps early the next night to recover.

At 50, if I sleep late watching web series, my gut reminds me who is the boss the very next morning. The body just stops digesting things properly when you don't give it rest!

Yes, sleep deprivation disturbs your gut motility and can cause diarrhea or IBS flares. My tip is to stick to light food, drink coconut water, and prioritize an 8-hour sleep tonight.

Happened to me last week after a weekend trip. Barely slept for two days and ended up running to the washroom. Just slept for 10 hours straight on Monday and my stomach got back to normal.

Actually, my doctor explained that sleep loss triggers the release of stress hormones like cortisol. This increases inflammation in the gut and speeds up digestion, leading to diarrhea. It is a very real physiological response.

Yes, sleep deprivation messes up digestion. When I miss sleep, I avoid heavy protein shakes and high-fiber foods for a day, stick to simple rice and curd, and focus on recovery.
