Does scratching make psoriasis worse?

My psoriasis flares up quite often, and the itching can be intense. I try my best not to scratch, but sometimes I give in. Does scratching make psoriasis worse and cause more irritation, or is it fine occasionally?

Yes, scratching definitely exacerbates psoriasis due to a medical phenomenon known as the Koebner response, where trauma to the skin causes new plaques to form. It is highly recommended to seek your doctor's advice for proper topical treatments to manage the itching safely.

I have had plaque psoriasis on my knees for a year. Whenever I scratch the plaques, they bleed and then expand even more the next week. Seriously, just apply some thick moisturizer and do not scratch.

Haan, scratching se psoriasis bilkul badh jata hai na. It causes more redness and infection. Jab bhi khujli ho, ice pack laga lo par nails mat use karo.

I am newly diagnosed with scalp psoriasis and the itching is quite bad. If I gently rub the scalp with my fingers instead of scratching with my nails, does that also make it worse?

Yes, scratching definitely makes psoriasis worse. It damages the skin and causes new plaques to grow in those scratched areas.

Psoriasis can be very itchy and uncomfortable, but scratching with your nails will only make the skin raw and painful. Try applying a little cold coconut oil gently with your fingertips to soothe the burning feeling.

Scratching is a big no-no for psoriasis. It literally triggers more skin cell overproduction in that exact spot, making the patches larger and more painful. Keep your hands off and use your prescribed coal tar or steroid creams instead.

Scratching causes micro-injuries to the skin, which triggers a localized inflammatory response in psoriasis patients. If the itch is driving you crazy, ask your doctor for an oral antihistamine or a soothing topical gel to manage it.
