Does rice give you diabetes?

My grandchildren keep telling me to eat less rice because it will give me 'sugar' (diabetes). We have always eaten rice every day. Is it true that eating rice gives you diabetes, or is it more complicated than that?

I totally get it, rice is our comfort food and the fear of getting diabetes makes it so stressful to enjoy meals. It doesn't directly give you diabetes, but yes, eating large portions daily can increase risk. Try taking smaller portions with lots of veggies.

If rice gave everyone diabetes, the entire population of South India would be in trouble by now! Honestly, it's just about how much we sit around after eating. I am too tired to walk today, but I still ate my bowl of rice.

Boiling rice and straining the excess starch water is a traditional way to make it lighter. But if you already have high blood sugar or extreme fatigue, home modifications won't be enough. Please see a doctor for a proper checkup.

We don't need to fear rice. For my family, we started mixing some brown rice or hand-pounded rice with white rice to increase the fiber. It is a very practical way to prevent sugar spikes for everyone in the family.
