Does rhinovirus cause vomiting?

My daughter has a severe cold, and along with the sniffles, she's also thrown up a couple of times. I know colds are usually caused by rhinovirus, but I wasn't sure if vomiting is also a symptom. Should I be worried about the vomiting specifically?

I was reading about this on a medical blog today. Apparently, rhinovirus mostly causes nasal symptoms, but in young children, swallowed mucus can irritate the stomach and sometimes lead to vomiting. Quite interesting how the body reacts.

It is pretty rare for rhinovirus to cause vomiting in adults, from what I know. When I had it last winter, it was just a massive headache and runny nose. If you are throwing up, it might be a different stomach bug or flu.

Please be very careful if there is persistent vomiting along with cold symptoms. In my daughter's case, it led to severe dehydration very quickly, and we had to visit the emergency room. Consult a pediatrician immediately if the patient cannot keep fluids down.

My son vomited twice during a cold last month and I completely panicked thinking it was some dangerous stomach infection. The doctor reassured me that coughing fits can easily trigger vomiting in kids. He was completely fine the next day.

If you or your child are vomiting, keep ORS solutions ready at home to prevent dehydration, which saves expensive hospital admission costs. Don't rush to get costly viral panel tests done immediately unless the doctor specifically advises it.
