Does rheumatoid arthritis worsen in cold weather?

Every winter, my joint pain and stiffness get much worse, almost unbearable sometimes. I've always felt a connection, but wanted to confirm if cold weather actually makes rheumatoid arthritis symptoms more severe. Is this a common experience for others too?

I used to panic every November when my fingers would swell up like sausages, thinking my arthritis was getting permanently worse. But then I realized it's just the barometric pressure changes in winter affecting the joints. It is completely normal and settles down.

The cold weather definitely contracts the muscles and stiffens the joints. I find that doing gentle Sukshma Vyayama (micro-yoga exercises) for fingers and ankles along with deep breathing helps keep the blood flow active during winter mornings.

My rheumatologist explained that low barometric pressure in cold weather causes tissues around the joints to expand, leading to increased pain. It doesn't mean the disease is progressing faster, it is just a temporary response to the temperature drop. Keeping warm is the best defense.

Actually yaar, winter in Pune is not even that cold, but still my joints feel so stiff in the morning. I have to use warm water for everything otherwise it really hurts. Keeping a hot water bag handy is a life saver, honestly.

I was researching this online because my uncle complains of severe knee pain every time the AC is too cold. Apparently, cold weather makes the joint fluid thicker, which makes movement more painful. Quite fascinating how weather affects our bodies!
