Does putting vicks on your feet help you sleep?

My mother swears by this old trick – putting Vicks VapoRub on your feet and then wearing socks before bed. I have trouble sleeping sometimes. Does putting Vicks on your feet actually help you sleep better?

While it seems like a harmless remedy, please be cautious if you have sensitive skin. I applied a thick layer of Vicks on my feet and wore tight socks, which caused a severe chemical burn and skin irritation that took weeks to heal. If you are having chronic sleep issues, it is much safer to consult a doctor.

I have been struggling to sleep for weeks and a colleague suggested this Vicks trick. Does it actually work, or is it just a placebo? I am a bit nervous that the strong smell might actually keep me awake even more.

For a simple, soothing night's sleep, massaging your feet with warm sesame oil is a much better traditional remedy. Vicks can provide a cooling sensation that relaxes some people, but if your sleeplessness is due to anxiety or physical pain, please see a general physician.

I actually tried this last week when I was desperately looking for ways to cure my insomnia. The menthol sensation did feel very relaxing and distracts your mind, which helped me drift off to sleep quite nicely. Just wear an old pair of socks so you don't ruin your bedsheets!

It probably just helps by relaxing your nervous system through the cooling effect, but it's not a real cure for bad sleep habits. If you want deep sleep, try avoiding screens for an hour before bed and doing a heavy workout during the day. That works way better than any rub.
