Does protein cause kidney stones?

I've started going to the gym and increased my protein intake quite a bit with shakes and supplements. My brother once had kidney stones, and he warned me that too much protein can cause them. Is there any truth to this?

I had a 6mm kidney stone last year after overdoing whey protein and not drinking enough water. If you are taking high protein, you absolutely must drink 3-4 liters of water daily to flush out uric acid.

Excess of anything is bad. If you eat kilos of chicken and paneer everyday without any balance, your kidneys will obviously get loaded. Eat normal home-cooked food and keep yourself well hydrated.

High animal protein can increase calcium and uric acid in your urine, which raises the risk of stones. Try to balance your animal protein with plant sources, and always add a squeeze of lemon to your water to help prevent stone formation.

With my high BP, I have to be very careful with kidney health. My doctor advised me to keep protein intake moderate and monitor kidney function through annual serum creatinine tests. A balanced lifestyle is key.
