Does prednisone cause muscle pain?

After starting Prednisone for my rheumatoid arthritis flare-up, I've developed significant muscle pain and weakness, especially in my thighs and arms. Could this medication be the cause of my muscle pain?

I was looking up steroid side effects online because my dad started prednisone, and apparently muscle weakness or pain is a known symptom called steroid myopathy. It usually happens with high doses or long-term use. Have you been taking it for a long time?

Yes, prednisone can cause electrolyte imbalances and muscle wasting over time, which shows up as pain or weakness. I logged my symptoms on my health tracker and noticed the fatigue peaked during week two. Try staying hydrated and talk to your physician about monitoring your potassium levels.

At 50, everything aches anyway, but when I took prednisone, my thigh muscles felt like I had run a marathon without leaving my bed! It is a very weird kind of dull ache. Just have to drag myself through the day until the doctor says I can stop this dose.

When I was prescribed prednisone for my skin condition, I did feel some unusual soreness in my upper arms and legs after a few days. Personally, taking warm water baths and doing very gentle stretching helped me manage the discomfort until my course got completed.

Oh, I totally get what you mean, my legs felt so heavy and achy when I was on it last year. Don't push yourself too hard at home or work right now, your body needs extra rest. Just drink lots of water and talk to your doc if the pain is making daily tasks difficult.

Please don't ignore this muscle pain or think it will just go away. I once ignored severe body aches while on steroids, thinking it was normal, and it turned out to be a major electrolyte drop that landed me in the clinic. Get yourself checked by your doctor immediately to rule out any complications.
