Does potassium citrate help with kidney stones?

My brother has been getting kidney stones quite frequently, and his urologist suggested potassium citrate. Does this medicine actually help in preventing or dissolving kidney stones, ya fir it's just for symptoms?

My uncle was prescribed this and it really helped him pass his small stone without much pain. It basically makes the urine less acidic so stones don't grow.

Yes, it works very well to dissolve certain types of stones. But don't start buying it over the counter, let the doctor decide the exact dosage first.

Yes it works. My mother takes it under her doctor's guidance and it has kept her stones from recurring.

I had a 4mm stone last semester and doc gave me potassium citrate syrup. It tasted a bit weird but my stone cleared out in two weeks flat.

Chill, it definitely helps prevent and break down those annoying stones. Just take your meds, drink your water, and don't stress too much, you will be fine.

Along with potassium citrate, try drinking barley water (jau ka paani) and eating watermelon. But if you have extreme pain or blood in your urine, go straight to the hospital.

Man, kidney pain woke me up at 3 AM once, and I wouldn't wish that on my worst enemy. Yes, potassium citrate helps, but please drink ocean-loads of water too or nothing will save you.

I also heard it helps with kidney health. Does anyone know if we have to take it daily or is it only for a short time when pain starts?

Please go to a proper doctor immediately. I ignored my mild back pain thinking it was just gas, and it ended up being a huge stone that needed surgery. Don't self-medicate with anything.

Clinically, potassium citrate increases urinary pH, which prevents calcium oxalate stones from forming. However, only a urologist can determine if this is the right line of treatment for your specific stone type.

It can help, but you must get an ultrasound first to see the size of the stone. Taking any supplement without a doctor's supervision can sometimes harm your kidneys.
