Does physical activity improve mental health?

I've been feeling quite stressed lately and looking for ways to improve my overall well-being. My therapist suggested incorporating more physical activity. Does physical activity actually improve mental health, or is it more about physical benefits?

In our times, we did so much household work and walked everywhere, which kept our minds very calm. A walk in the fresh morning air along with some warm tulsi tea is a wonderful, simple remedy to soothe an anxious mind.

Definitely it does. You don't need a fancy gym membership for this. Just a 30-minute brisk walk on your terrace or in a nearby public park every evening can work wonders for your mood and stress levels.

I completely understand how heavy and exhausting mental health struggles can feel, sometimes even getting out of bed is hard. But honestly, even a 5-minute stretch or walk inside the room makes a difference. Please take it slow and don't pressure yourself.

Totally! Whenever I am stressed about my college exams, I just go play football or hit the gym for an hour. It completely clears my head and makes me sleep so much better. You guys should definitely try it.

It absolutely does, dear. Physical activity helps release pent-up tension in your muscles and calms your nervous system. Whenever you feel overwhelmed, just step outside for a short walk. I promise you'll feel at least a little bit lighter.

Bhai, running literally saved me from a dark phase last year. When you sweat, your brain releases those happy chemicals, and it is a natural high. Just start running 2 kilometers a day and see the change yourself.

Yes, physical movement is like medicine for the mind. Many members here have shared how simple gardening, cycling, or even dancing to their favorite songs helped them cope with stressful times. Find something you enjoy and make it a habit.

Haan yaar, physical activity se dimaag ekdum fresh ho jata hai. Jab bhi mood off ho na, toh bas headphones lagao aur walk pe nikal jao. Stress bilkul chala jata hai aur neend bhi badhiya aati hai.

Yes, I managed my postpartum depression mainly through daily walks and light aerobics. My tip is: don't wait for motivation, just put on your shoes and step out. Even a consistent 15 minutes daily is better than a 1-hour intense workout once a week.

My psychiatrist actually explained that exercise increases levels of BDNF, a protein that supports brain plasticity and reduces inflammation. He told me to treat physical activity as a core part of my therapy, and it has truly transformed my mental wellness.

My mother always said that sitting idle breeds bad thoughts, which is so true. Daily active chores or a warm walk under the sun really helps. Of course, if the sadness feels too heavy, consulting a doctor is the most reliable way to heal.

Scientific consensus strongly supports that exercise reduces anxiety and depression symptoms. However, if you are struggling with severe mental health issues, please don't rely solely on exercise. Consulting a mental health professional is always the best first step.
