Does pepper cause kidney stones?

I recently had a kidney stone removed and the doctor advised me to watch my diet. My mother-in-law told me to avoid too much pepper as it causes kidney stones. Is this true, does pepper really cause them?

Wait, really? I put black pepper on literally everything, from my morning eggs to hostel Maggi. I don't think standard kitchen pepper causes stones unless you are eating it by the bowlful. Just drink lots of water and you should be fine, chill.

Please don't believe everything you read on WhatsApp groups or random websites about food causing stones. Kidney stones are highly complex and depend on your overall hydration, genetics, and calcium levels. It is much safer to consult a urologist and get a proper scan done if you are actually feeling pain.

I don't think a pinch of pepper in your daily food is going to cause kidney stones. The main culprit for most busy professionals is just not drinking enough water during long meeting hours. Keep a 1-litre bottle on your desk, finish at least three of those a day, and you won't have to worry about this.

I used to think my mild backache was just from sitting on my office chair or eating spicy food, so I ignored it for months. One night the pain became so unbearable I had to be rushed to the ER for a 8mm kidney stone. Please don't ignore any dull ache in your sides, get a doctor's checkup immediately.

If you are worried because you have lower back pain, don't start cutting out spices blindly. Go to a local lab and get a basic urine routine and ultrasound done, it costs less than 1500 rupees in most places. Getting a clear report is much cheaper than letting a small stone grow and paying for emergency hospitalisation later.

Oh my god, I also read about this online and got so scared that I stopped using black pepper entirely for a week! But then I realized my anxiety was just making me paranoid over tiny things. It is highly unlikely a normal diet causes this, but maybe we should both just ask a doctor to be absolutely sure and peaceful.

Actually, black pepper is high in oxalates, so if you are already prone to calcium oxalate kidney stones, doctors usually recommend limiting it. However, for a healthy person, it's totally fine in moderate amounts. Just balance your vegetarian meals with enough calcium-rich foods like curd, which binds oxalates in the gut.

Black pepper actually has oxalate, which in very high amounts can contribute to certain types of stones, but a little spice is harmless. I used to get stones often, and drinking fresh coconut water and barley water (jowar paani) helped me a lot. But remember to keep your salt and tea intake low too, as they also affect stones.
