Does pcos affect breastfeeding?

I've been diagnosed with PCOS and I'm currently expecting my first child. I really want to breastfeed, but I'm worried if my PCOS might create difficulties. Does PCOS affect a woman's ability to breastfeed successfully?

Yes, PCOS can sometimes affect your milk supply because of hormone imbalances like low progesterone or high androgen levels. But please don't worry, many mothers with PCOS breastfeed successfully! You just might need a little extra support from a lactation consultant.

Yes, it can impact milk supply, but you don't have to suffer in silence. Instead of trying random online tips, directly book an appointment with a lactation consultant early on. They can give you practical scheduling and pumping strategies to boost supply.

In our time, we used to give fennel seeds (saunf) and fenugreek (methi) water to new mothers to help with milk flow, which is very helpful. Since PCOS is a hormonal issue, consult your doctor first, but these traditional foods can gently help support your supply.

Hormones definitely play a big role here, and PCOS can cause a delay in milk coming in. If your doctor allows, light walking and maintaining a balanced, low-GI diet can help regulate your insulin and hormone levels, which indirectly supports lactation.

My wife has PCOS and she struggled a lot with low milk supply initially after our baby was born. It was super stressful for her, but once we met a good lactation expert and followed her advice, things got much better. Definitely seek professional help.
