Does oiling scalp help with dandruff?

My scalp has been really flaky and itchy, and I'm pretty sure it's dandruff. My mother always tells me to oil my scalp regularly, but I'm not sure if it actually helps with dandruff or just makes hair shiny. Does regular oiling truly alleviate dandruff?

My grandmother always insisted on heavy warm coconut oiling for all hair problems. However, my dermatologist explained that dandruff is actually caused by a yeast that feeds on oil, so leaving oil on the scalp can make it worse. I only oil my hair lengths now, keeping it off the scalp.

I used to oil my hair overnight hoping my dry flakes would go away, but it just created a sticky buildup. Now I only oil an hour before my bath and wash it off completely with a salicylic acid shampoo. It gives the perfect balance without aggravating the dandruff.

This is one of the most common mistakes people make. Oiling does not cure dandruff, it actually glues the dead skin cells to your scalp, making the flaking look worse. Avoid heavy oiling when your dandruff is active and focus on clarifying shampoos instead.

I had severe seborrheic dermatitis and oiling made my scalp raw and itchy. If you must oil, use a very light oil mixed with neem or tea tree, and wash it out within 30 minutes. Never leave it overnight, that is just inviting more fungus to grow.

Honestly, the only thing oiling my scalp did was ruin my pillowcases and make me look like a greaseball while I lay awake at night. My dandruff didn't care about the oil at all. Just use a medicated shampoo from the chemist, it save so much time and laundry.

Don't stress too much about the flakes, it happens to almost everyone. Just stop the heavy scalp oiling for a few weeks because it really does trap the fungus. Use a gentle anti-dandruff shampoo instead, and let your scalp breathe naturally.
