Does oatmeal cause kidney stones?

I recently had a kidney stone, and now I'm trying to be very careful with my diet. My neighbour mentioned that oatmeal might be something to watch out for if you're prone to stones. Is there any truth to oatmeal causing kidney stones?

Oatmeal has moderate amount of oxalates which can contribute to stones in some people, but it is better to get your urine and blood tested first. Everyone's body produces stones differently, so please get a proper kidney function checkup done by a doctor before changing your diet.

Nahi bhaiya, oats khane se patthari nahi hoti hai. Hum toh roz subah daliya ya oats khate hain aur bilkul theek hain. Bus dher saara paani piya karo dinbhar, sab thik rahega.

My teenage son had a small calcium oxalate kidney stone last year and we were so worried. His doctor told us that oatmeal is perfectly fine to eat, but we should always serve it with a source of calcium, like milk or yogurt, to bind the oxalates in the stomach. This really works.

I ignored my mild back ache thinking it was just gas, and it turned into a massive kidney stone that required surgery. While oats have mild oxalates, do not rely on random online advice if you are feeling any lower back pain. Go see a urologist immediately and get an ultrasound done.

Don't blindly believe WhatsApp forwards claiming oats cause kidney stones. While oats have oxalates, the actual cause of stones is usually dehydration or genetic factors. Please consult a qualified nephrologist instead of self-diagnosing based on random internet articles.
