Does menthol help with pain?

Muscle soreness after my workouts, and sometimes a stiff neck from sitting at the computer, are common for me. My dad always uses balms with menthol for his aches, and says it works wonders. I wanted to know if menthol actually helps with pain relief or just gives a cooling sensation.

Menthol does give a nice cooling sensation that distracts from muscular pain temporarily. Along with local application, I always suggest eating anti-inflammatory foods like turmeric ginger tea. What you put inside your body is just as important as what you apply on the outside.

Menthol acts as a counter-irritant, meaning it desensitizes sensory receptors. While it is fine for minor sprains, if you are using it for chronic pain, you must ask your doctor about the root cause. At Max Hospital, my physio told me that temporary numbing won't fix structural joint issues.

Be very careful if you are using strong menthol creams on severe joint pain. I once kept applying balm on what I thought was a simple muscle pull, but it turned out to be a ligament tear that got worse because I delayed treatment. If the pain is sharp and doesn't go away, please consult an orthopedic doctor.

I can only speak from my own experience, but I always keep a roll-on with menthol in my bag for headaches. It creates a cooling effect that really dulls the throbbing feeling. Everyone's skin and pain tolerance are different, but it works well for me.

In our time, we always used those strong mint balms whenever our knees or back ached. It definitely gives quick relief for everyday aches and tiredness. Don't worry, it is a tried and tested way to soothe tired muscles, just don't apply it on open cuts.

Honestly, that cooling smell of menthol balm is the only thing keeping me awake and alive during late-night work shifts. It totally numbs my neck pain for an hour or two. It's not a permanent cure, but it is a lifesaver when you just need to get through the day.

I get so anxious when my back hurts suddenly, and I always search if applying too much menthol is bad for the skin. It does help calm the muscle spasms quickly, which helps me stop panicking. Just use a small amount first to make sure your skin doesn't get irritated.
